What is The Omnivore?

At Freedom Farms we consider ourselves proud omnivores… and we know a bunch of you – our supporters, friends and whānau – consider yourselves proud omnivores too.

Food is not a simple subject… it is tangled up in just about everything: the environment, politics, history, culture and cooking, identity, whānau and love. Aotearoa New Zealand is an agricultural nation, and we feel incredibly hopeful about the role we’ll play in the future of food production. And we’re chuffed that so many Kiwis are on this journey with us.

The Omnivore celebrates everything delicious, and delves into the fascinating world of things edible: from farm to plate and all the places in between.

We looooove hearing what you reckon about the stuff we share — but we're also very firm believers in the value of online civility and respectful conversation. We're very aware that conversations about food can quickly become unkind and judgmental.

While we fully support every reader having strong opinions, anything less than complete civility is unacceptable to Freedom Farms. Comments are moderated carefully.

We reserve the right to delete or edit comments that strike us as:

  • rude

  • judgmental

  • ranty

  • attacking

  • self-promotional

  • revealing other people's personal information, possibly without their consent

This doesn't mean, of course, that you can't disagree with people. You just need to do so constructively and with respect. You also need to do it with integrity, which means that if you want to be constructive, you better not hide behind an anonymous comment. We have a very itchy moderation trigger finger with anonymous commenters.

Maybe this policy seems harsh, but ultimately it boils down to this: we think online snark is a waste of everyone's time. The Omnivore is like our living room… if you come into our home we expect you to use your manners.

We understand that this comment policy won't be a good fit for everyone's communication style — and we're fine with that. Thankfully, it's a great big internet out there, and we heartily encourage you to share your thoughts and opinions however you might like via your own website, or on another site that matches your communication style.

We believe in respectfully agreeing to disagree and moving on to the things that really matter — like growing a food system that is kinder for farm animals, takes it easy on the environment and can be resilient into the future… acknowledging that how that looks may be different for different people.

The comment section of each post will stay open for two weeks after the publication date. After that, comments are closed.
